So much has happened!

Wow, was I shocked when I got on here and realized how long it had been! Many things have happened since then. My husband is very involved with the True/False Film Festival here in town. It's a weekend long festival filled with documentaries, music, events, etc. It was shortly after my last post that he got busy with that and now it's finally over! Maybe I can get back to normal instead of feeling like a single parent. I really can't complain too much though. He loves doing it and I'm happy he's able to. So, let's see what's been happening... Here's a picture of Lainey in one of the Ripley's that I made... for me! (Just in case anyone wonders, her little red eye is due to a sty... she gets them all them all the time.) I'm hoping to have enough yarn to make a bigger one for myself. She requested a pink Ripley too, so that was in her stocking Christmas Eve. I have been looking at some patterns from Lil Blue Boo for quite some time. She has some adorable recycled t-shirt patterns and I finally bought several. I made one for Lainey for Valentine's Day. Here she is playing in the snow before I even got the neckband put in (that happened during her afternoon quiet time.) It's fabulous! The pattern was so easy to follow and I can't wait to make more. I also got the halter dress, but it's not quite warm enough to play outside with one of those on yet.Here are the Hello Kitty pj's I made for her for Christmas. She loves them (yeah!) and I hope they'll fit for at least one more year (I left them quite long, so I can drop the hem later on.) I freezer paper stenciled on the shirt.It turned out great and I've had a request from my husband for a matching Hello Kitty t-shirt. I need to get on that! Hayden got fingerless mitts in his stocking. I don't have a picture of him in his pjs.

I have some other projects that I've worked on, but no photos. I finished a Shalom for the Knitting Olympics. (I've since made a few changes to the cuffs and bottom of the sweater. I'll post a picture after it blocks.) My February Lady Sweater was too small and will probably be frogged to be re-knit. I think I've been on a gathering spree instead of finishing things. I think that's changing though. Once we're through the birthdays in March things seem to be a bit easier.

Here's another old post that never made it to the blog...

I've been working like crazy trying to finish up gifts, etc. I knit up a Cairn for my FIL and have a Ripley ready for my MIL, a pair of Hello Kitty pj's ready for Lainey (they are so cute! I freezer paper stenciled Hello Kitty on a long sleeved white t that she already had and I used the pattern from Oliver + S to make flannel bottoms -- Hello Kitty, of course!), I'm still working on Hayden's Mizzou fleece bottoms and the 2nd in his pair of fingerless gloves. Doug is supposed to be getting thick wool socks for Christmas, but I won't have time to start them. I think he'll be happy with what I got him though (and the socks will be started in 2010.) I also worked up a few handmade gifts for others, but better not post just yet.) I'll be baking chocolate chip cookies AND oatmeal scotchies for Santa because each of my kids is POSITIVE that they know what his favorite is! Luckily, my mom is continuing her tradition of taking the grandkids to look at lights tomorrow night. Once the house is quiet I'll be rushing to accomplish as much as possible.

Apples Galore - (old post that never got finished)

I've got several old posts that I started and never added... not sure why. I decided I'd go ahead and add them, so here you go!

Well, I made 4 apple pies weekend before last. It would have been 5, but some came back from my husband's meeting. I've canned 29 pints of applesauce so far. I've still got about 20 pounds of apples left and am thinking an apple crisp will be made very soon! Hayden was a bit under the weather last weekend, so there wasn't too much cooking going on.

I'm knitting along on Lainey's socks... I think I'm ready for the toe, but need to try it on her when she gets home. (These are going to be too small -- she's going to have huge feet, just like me!) Hayden wants rainbow socks, so those will be started next. (Never were... he changed his mind). I make them each a pair of socks to go in their stocking, but this year Lainey decided on a hat and Hayden wanted fingerless mitts. I'm also making pj's this year (vs. buying them like I've done in the past). I'm using the Bedtime Story Pajama pattern from Oliver and S. I'm planning to just make the bottoms for Hayden and find a matching t-shirt.

My Ishbel is now further than when I had to frog it back. The Malabrigo lace is so soft! I've been holding it to my neck and I think this is the first wool that I'll actually be able to wear right next to my skin.

I'm feeling all better and have been knitting, crafting, etc. this week. I (finally) finished a little pair of socks I started for L. They were way too small, so I gifted them to a friend. I started a new pair for L in Patons Stretch Sock in Plum. I also cast on for an Ishbel with my friend, Aimee.I'm using Malabrigo lace in Hummingbird. It was a lot bigger, but I found a mistake and wasn't able to drop down to fix it. Luckily, I'm in the stockinette section, so it shouldn't take too long to catch back up!

I finished up L's book bag. My husband asked what MSG stood for... I had to explain that it was L's monogram (L is from her nickname)! I think it turned out well for my first freezer paper stencil attempt. I've got t-shirts for both kids that we're going to work on Sunday afternoon while Doug is gone to a meeting. I can't wait!

I can't get ahead of myself though. My nephew is spending the night tonight and we're making turkey burgers. I also rented Monsters vs Aliens as our Friday night movie. Then, we'll be going to the market in the a.m. to pick up several bags of apples (a mix of gala and granny smith) for pie and applesauce making tomorrow. (I'll probably be going alone while they watch cartoons, but that's okay!) I've still got all my canning equipment out and just need to wash the jars and lids and get organized. I made more pickles last weekend and may get a few more canning tomatoes tomorrow, if they're available. I feel like a little squirrel stocking up for the winter! So far I have...

17 pints and 1 quart of dill pickles (spears and sandwich slices), 7 pints and 10 half-pints of apple butter, 8 pints of salsa, 5 pints of hot sauce (for Black Bean Chilequile, a Moosewood recipe), 6 quarts and 9 pints of pasta sauce, 14 quarts of tomatoes, 6 bags of frozen red peppers, 2 batches of frozen pesto, 6 bags of shredded zucchini, 25 pounds of frozen blueberries and 1 bag of frozen corn!

Luckily, we have a huge freezer that is also filled with beef from a friends family farm, salmon, sausage, bread (when it's on sale), some frozen veggie lasagna and a lot more. That reminds me, I need to get a few more veggies when I get the apples and make a double batch of veggie lasagna (a Moosewood recipe). We have some friends that just had a baby and I'm planning to take them a pan along with salad and bread. Looks like it will be a busy weekend!

Now, for a quick pick up of the house and a little sit down with my knitting! L and I are volunteering in the library at H's school during his library time and will be working for his teacher for an hour or so after. I'm so glad that I'm able to do things like this! I remember my mom being there to help when I was in elementary school and I hope my kids have the same fond memories!

I'm not sure if I'm having side effects from my flu shot or if I've caught a bug, but I feel terrible (which is a bit better than yesterday!) I had a low-grade fever, but enough to make me feel bad and have chills. Aches, pains and I won't go into the other issues! Lainey slept all night though and came in my room at 7 a.m. to see if I was feeling better. I feel like I got hit by a bus, but other than that, I'm fine!

I have to say though, I have THE MOST FABULOUS kids on the planet! School got out early yesterday. Hayden remembered to meet me in the circle drive (so I didn't have to infect anyone) and I took them to McDonald's so that I didn't have to stand up for too long fixing their lunch. When we got home I went back to bed. Hayden turned on cartoons in the family room for Lainey and turned on the Wii for himself. I'd hear Lainey come upstairs and they'd check on me occasionally. No fighting! Only nice, helpful words. Lots of "I love yous" to each other (and me). I was able to sleep away the day. We got out around 6 to pick up dinner and Hayden informed me that he couldn't wait for me to feel better because fast food is his least favorite. He'd rather eat the things I fix for the family! I just about cried!

Doug got home around 8 from sand volleyball and put the kids to bed for me. I was in bed then and didn't wake until Lainey came in... I'm going to go get a big glass of water, 4 ibuprofen and the rice bag for my back. I think I might even be able to knit today! I don't feel quite right when a day goes by that I don't do something "creative" (includes cooking for me. I don't usually follow a recipe.) It's been about 24 hours since I had the fever, so if I can beat the aches and pains into submission we might go out to the library today. I have a couple of books on hold. Hayden doesn't have school and I hate to have him stuck in the house... although he's made a preschool under his bunkbed for Lainey. He told her yesterday they could have pajama day and he'd teach her about frogs! He's such a sweetie!

I also received an award from my BKB, Kristin! I'll post about it after I feel a bit better.

But not knitting much... although I see my slump coming to an end! I've been tending my tiny garden (which didn't do much), started a compost bin, cooking all the yummy stuff I've been picking up at the farmer's market and canning pickles, salsa, pasta sauce and plain tomatoes. But not much knitting... I even went to our LYS's annual sale and left without yarn! I have so much stash that I don't really need anything. I've picked out yarn (from my stash) and patterns to knit up a few baby things for a friend that's pregnant. I'm still working on my Lady February Sweater in Dream in Color Classy and have a few other things on the needles. I'm hoping to start a pair of socks for each of the kids and maybe Doug too!

Instead of knitting, I've been sucked into this...

It's the Bubble Dress from Oliver + S. I had looked at this pattern for a long time, but just couldn't spend the money on it (since it's been years since I've sewn any "real" projects.) BUT they had a no shipping special and I finally gave in. I decided to make this for a wedding that we attended over Labor Day weekend. It turned out so well! The instructions were fabulous and it was a lot of fun! I also got a pajama pattern and plan to make several pairs for the kids in some great flannel.

Now, for some knitting....

Now that I have a laptop I'm hoping to keep my blog updated a bit more (okay, a lot more!) My problem right now is being able to download photos from my camera... My usb cable seems to have gone missing.

On the knitting front, I've started a couple of small projects that I can't mention. I'm also plugging away on my second Lady February Sweater. I'm using Dream in Color Classy in Spring Tickle, although, the more I look at the color chart on their website, the more I think they mislabelled it and it really is Happy Forest. (I had originally ordered Happy Forest, but when it came it was marked Spring Tickle. It's just not that yellow though.) I'm also working on a sample for Teva Durham's next book! I was so excited when I got the yarn recently. I finally finished my gauge swatch and am hoping to cast on for the actual project very soon. I can't show pictures, etc., but once the book comes out I'll let you know which one I worked on.

And, I got a new knitting bag! It's a Namaste Zuma bag in lime. Thanks to my BKB, who originally was coveting it! Although, she quickly asked them to order her one as well.

I'm working on the cable for the camera and will post some pictures once I get one!

Out of a knitting slump??

I was in a big Christmas knitting kick. Knit the Haruha scarf for Doug's mom, a sweater for Hayden that was finished just in time and a hat for Doug's dad (that didn't fit. I don't have anymore Noro Kureyon in the right color, so I'm debating a stripe of something else.)... then I started reading the Twilight series (it's all my BKB, Kristin's fault... hahahaha) and didn't knit for about 2 weeks. I finally dug into the knitting bag last Tuesday in order to attend Knitter's Guild and actually knit. Then, Kristin proceeds to start discussing a pair of mittens on Ravelry designed from a pair worn by Bella in Twilight (the movie.) which we had seen just a few days prior. I bit! I looked them up as soon as I got home and got the yarn Friday. I've got one finished and have cast on for the other. I am obsessed! But, I'm back on the knitting bandwagon!! Yeah!

I have a problem

I just can't seem to make myself write a blog post! Finally, I got a kick in the pants from Kpiep since she referenced my blog in hers. I was too embarrassed to have anyone see how long it had been since I'd been here. So, a brief synopsis of the goings on here since I last posted...

L is completely potty trained and keeps telling me she's "growing up" and is getting "bigger". She's at a fun stage (unless you count the whining and fits... I'm trying to forget them and just focus on the fun.)

H is in kindergarten and (fingers crossed it continues) all is going well! He seems to like it. He's also lost 2 teeth and is such a sweet boy. I vary between missing him horribly and being glad to have the time alone with L.

I finished my tuscany. I was planning to wear it on our trip to Chicago, but the trip was cancelled when my husband's grandfather passed away. We drove to Alva, OK instead, but I'm glad it happened the way it did since we already had childcare lined up and were both able to attend.

I also finished a February Lady Sweater for myself in Charcoal Cotton-ease. I think it's going to be a great grab and go sweater this Fall. (and will be easy to wash up when one of the kids uses me as a napkin.)

I've ordered enough Dream In Color Classy in Happy Forest to make another February Lady Sweater, but I'm still waiting for it to come in. I'm unsure what to do until then. I am still working on socks for myself (first one completed), but they just aren't what I want to work on right now. I started a Dragon Skin Wrap for Lainey, but I'm a bit stalled out on it as well. I really want to knit sweaters for myself!! I ordered the Something Red pattern from Knit and Tonic and am waiting to receive it. I also like the Wisteria pattern from Twist Collective (if you haven't checked out that website, do so now!!) I'm also finding that I'm gravitating toward patterns I can used a machine washable yarn for. I don't mind hand washing at all (in fact I just bought some soak I'm excited to try!), but since I have little ones and am a "walking napkin/kleenex" I don't want to do it everyday. I'll post pictures of the finished projects soon (cross my heart!)

Pixie's sweater is finished! I'll gift it to them today when we meet up. Here are a couple of pictures with Lainey modeling...

I need to make another for her. They work so well with most of her outfits. I don't think there's any rush though. It's supposed to be in the 90's and humid for a while!

We thought about walking to the library today, but I think it's just going to be too hot. Now, back to the Tuscany!

My weekend

We had a garage sale (that wasn't as well attended as I had wished. There's still a bunch of stuff left.) this weekend and I was busy with that. I did get out for World-Wide Knit in Public day on Saturday afternoon. The little project I mentioned in my last posted was shown to the recipients mama. I can't wait to get it finished for her. I'm knitting another February sweater for my friend Kristin's little pixie. I'm using Cotton-ease in taupe (they show a new hazelnut color on the website, but they didn't have it here in town yet.) She's a little red head and I hope it looks cute on her. Lainey has gotten tons of use from hers. I really prefer natural fibers, but there comes a time that having something that's easy to wash and won't be ruined if it gets in the dryer comes in handy. I'll try to post a picture soon.

We got out on the trail today and walked 4 miles with some friends. It was gorgeous out and we had a great time!

My House Exploded

I keep reminding myself that it's all stuff for the garage sale, but it looks like my house exploded! Even my knitting room has garage sale items covering the futon. I can still make it to the computer though!

It's supposed to be sunny here again today, so I thought I'd get out and take a picture of my Tuscany. I'm using the SWTC Bamboo in the Tequila colorway. I love the way it's turning out, but it's going to have to share my time with a little something I'm making for a little friend. I'll show you after it's gifted. Let's just say it's a very late birthday present for a little girl we know (and love)! I had planned on making her something else, but hadn't run across what I needed. The new plan popped into my head this a.m. I think it will be good garage sale knitting as well.

Ravelry Strikes Again

I've been sticking to my yarn diet recently and the longer I go, the easier it seems to get. I did get some "free" yarn from a fellow Ravelry member. It's a beautiful cotton/linen boucle and I can't wait to knit up a swatch. I've also sold or traded some yarn. I've finished the Uptown Boot Socks for my mom (no picture yet, but mom loves them!). I was working on my Indigo Ripples skirt and found out there was errata and I had to rip back 15 rounds. BUT, it's now finished! I've worn it several times and here it is....

I'm now working on a Tuscany shawl from No Sheep for You out of SWTC Bamboo in the Tequila colorway. I like how it looks, but it's slow going. I'm trying to keep my projects to a minimum, but am tempted to start something a little faster too. Maybe I'll pick my sock back up.

Anyway, on other fronts... I've been trying to get out and walk 3-4 times a week. There's a circle around the neighborhood that is a little more than 2.5 miles. It has several big hills and enough other stuff that it doesn't get boring. Unfortunately, it's quite hot and humid here right now, so the best time to go is early. Today is spotting rain and I have to take the girl and stroller. I'm going to skip it today. I've been steamcleaning carpets, cleaning house/doing yard work and baking. It's all stuff that got pushed to the side when I was working on preschool graduation and finishing my Indigo Ripples. I'm also working on gathering stuff for a garage sale in a week and a half. I'm getting rid of tons of baby/kid stuff! It would be so nice to find something when I want it!

I think we're getting into our summer schedule, so HOPEFULLY I'll be posting here a little more often!

One of those moments...

Have you ever had one of those moments when you start knitting a new project and you have a bad feeling about yarn/pattern/color? Something just doesn't work for you, but you just don't want to admit it? I just finished my Juliet and it's horrible! I love the pattern, but my yarn choice stinks! I know that it's been done with Cotton Ease on Ravelry, but mine is way too bulky. I got that feeling once I got into the garter stitch, but poo-poo'd myself. I'd love to knit it again (at some point in the future) with a different yarn. Once I get over the trauma (sniff, sniff) I might post a picture.

As for other knitting, I'm still working on my mom's socks. I broke a dpn working on them the other night. I really torque on my sock projects (especially if we're watching an exciting movie. A friend loaned us I am Legend. Not the best movie in the world, but I'm sure I was burning a lot of calories the way my heart was racing!)

I also started the Indigo Ripples skirt out of Interweave Knits. So far, so good. I'm using Rowan Denim that I got on sale specifically for this pattern. I started the pattern a little lower (I have an issue with things close to my waist. I don't like them too low either. Hopefully, I got it right.) and am knitting further before starting the lace repeat. I'm also planning to make it right below the knees.

My husband has an annual meeting for work that is being held in Chicago in August. We're taking the train there (so excited!) and I'm hoping that I have several projects finished to take with me. I'm also hoping to get a little souvenir yarn to bring home. I may have to sell off some stash on Ravelry to justify it since the yarn diet is going quite well!

Sorry for the lack of pictures! I'll try to take some for the next post. It's supposed to be pretty here for a few days and I should be able to get some good light.

Baby Booties and Birthdays

We went to a baptism for twins recently. Doug is the godfather for the little boy (Baby W) and another friend is the godmother to the little girl (Baby E). We are the godparents to their other daugther. They've been friends of Doug's for years now, so I felt the need to make a little something special. I knit up little silk slippers for Baby E and added a few beads and organza ribbon. For Baby W I knit up little cream alpaca slip-ons, but added a button for decoration and ribbons to help keep them on his little feet.

We also had several birthday celebrations at our house during the month of March. Hayden turned 5. He had a pirate party with 15 preschoolers at our house. It went off without a hitch! Here's the cake I made for the party (6 cake mixes and a lot of frosting later...) and the pirate and his friends.

Lainey turned 2 and had a tea party with her little friends. They all played very well together.Then we had little finger sandwiches, juice, fruit salad and birthday cake. I borrowed a couple of little tables and chairs (we had enough seating for 4) and had them in the kitchen for easy clean up. There were 9 little kids (a few of them were bigger siblings) and she seemed to have a great time! (Hayden dressed up too!)

On the knitting front, I still have pictures to take and post of my fingerless mitts. I'm working on a hat for my husbands birthday (today!) that is almost finished. I'm also working on Uptown Boot Socks for my mom's birthday (which was Monday), but I only have the first sock finished. She's tried it on though and loves it!

We had another trip to the ER last week for our littlest monkey. She fell off a kitchen stool and hit her head. About 30 minutes later she threw up on me, so off to the ER for a CAT scan. Everything looked okay, but we got up every 2 hours through the night to make sure it was still that way.

We also registered for kindergarten! I shed no tears, but find myself thinking about his baby years a lot. He's excited, which makes it a lot easier for me. It's raining here again today, so pictures may have to wait a bit more.

Lost

Wow! Time flies by. We've been sick (off and on), to the ER, visited the Dr., contemplating food allergies, had a first haircut, had my birthday... It's been a bit crazy, but that's no excuse! We've got birthdays for both kids coming up this month as well. A pirate party for Hayden and a tea party for little miss. On the knitting front I've finished the first sock of the pair I'm making for myself. Doug's clogs are done and being used. I started, frogged and restarted Uptown Boot Socks for my mom. My Juliet is so close to being done, but has been put aside for everything else. Pictures of these things will follow soon. A photo shoot is in the works.

I do have pictures of a BSJ that I made and then gifted to a beautiful little girl! I used SWS and love it (even if a little splitty...)

I've been making tutus for Lainey. She's quite a girly girl sometimes and loves to dance!

And, here's the first haircut! A sucker at 9 a.m. really took her mind of everything!

Christmas Knitting is FINALLY Finished!

My SILs socks fit and were finished the day before they arrived for their visit! I have now officially started making a pair of socks for myself. They're just stockinette, but I'm using CTH mill ends in black/grey/plum colors. I think I'm going to love them! It is so soft.

I'm also getting ready to start felted clogs for my husband. He was so patient while I finished them up for his father and brother! I'm hoping to have them ready by the weekend. (I guess they're technically still Christmas knitting, but I feel better fooling myself.) I'm trying to decide what my next project will be. I'm planning on making something for myself. Here are a few in the running....

1. Tangled Yoke Cardigan - Eunny Jang
2. Indigo Ripple Skirt - Kat Coyle
3. Ariann - Chicknits
4. Shedir - Jenna Wilson (I've done this one before, but would love to make another.)

I have the yarn for all these (important when one is on a yarn diet!) If you want to help decide my first project for myself this year, offer up a vote! I'm feeling a bit indecisive! I also plan on knitting a lot of socks for myself. After the first pair is done I'm planning a pair of Cookie A. socks!

Goodbye to 2007

Wow! I can't believe that when I wake up tomorrow it will be 2008! Hayden will turn 5 and start kindergarten, Lainey will (hopefully) potty train, I'll turn 38 and have my 8th wedding anniversary, and I'll have my 7th knitting anniversary! It does and doesn't seem like it's been that long. Most of the friends that I took the class with don't knit anymore, in fact, I think there's only one other out of the six of us. I have to say that I'm completely obsessed with it and can't understand why anyone would quit!

I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year's Eve and 2008! I doubt I'll be up until midnight, unless I'm knitting.

As for knitting progress, I'm still working on my SIL's socks in STR G-Rocks. The first is finished and the second is on the needles. I'm not sure that she'll like them, but we'll see. I stopped the sock progress to quickly knit two little hats for our friends that just had twins. They were early, but healthy and only in ICU one day! I didn't take pictures yet (I was knitting right up until we headed to the hospital to visit), but will hopefully get pictures of them on the babies next weekend. Both were from Itty Bitty Hats. I used Cotton Fleece and did the newborn size on each, but think they should come closer to fitting than the hats they had on yesterday.

I got together with several friends at a new coffee shop last week to knit! They had great chai (and other things from what I heard) AND they have a fireplace! I love fireplaces (not that you'd know it... we have two. A woodburning and a gas log and we rarely use either. I guess I worry too much with two little ones around.) Anyway, the fireplace was going and we sat at the back of the shop right by it on the leather furniture. It was fabulous! We're hoping to get together next week at the same place.

Well, here's to another year of knitting gone by and (hopfully) another to come! I'm on a yarn diet that I'm hoping to be faithful to for 2008. The only yarn I'm able to purchase is if I don't have enough for a project. I'm planning to make a vest like Hayden's for each of his cousins, but I don't think I have enough Cascade 220 (unless they want them to be pink and green striped!) I won't be knitting them until closer to their birthdays, so I won't need the yarn until June or so. I'm hoping to have a complete lack of yarn purchases from January 1 until June 1. Then we'll see if I am still knitting gifts, etc. My "carrot"is $20 a month that I don't purchase any yarn. That could be a nice amount of STR if I'm able to stick to it! I am planning to make a small purchase from Knitpicks sometime soon though (without yarn). I'm hoping to order the sock needle set. My bamboo DPNs are on their last leg.

Not much knitting this weekend. Hayden has had a stomach bug most of the day. I've been trying to keep Lainey out of his way. Guess we'll see if we all come down with it. I'm hoping it will be all over by Christmas Eve, if we do.

Hayden wore his vest to his school program last week. He looked so handsome and he's asked when he can wear it again. I told him that after Christmas Eve it's all up to him!

Pay It Forward

I was reading Chrisknits blog recently and she decided to take part in a PIF exchange. She decided to send a handmade gift to the first 3 people who left a comment on her blog requesting to join this PIF exchange. (I actually got in on this!) She stated that she didn't know what the gifts would be and it may not be received tomorrow or next week, but it would be received within 365 days. The only thing you had to do in return is pay it forward by making the same promise on your blog. So, here I am making the promise! The first three people to respond with interest will receive a handmade gift from me sometime within the next year (I'm shooting more for sooner rather than later, but don't want to rush any presents I'm sending.) But, by responding and being chosen you also agree to pay it forward on your blog (if you don't have a blog you can do the same thing with a local charity or knitting group, etc.)

Christmas Knits

I started the red vest that Hayden requested on Monday night. I'm almost done with the front. I probably won't be knitting something like this again for a while. My arms and neck are killing me, so I'm headed to bed early tonight. I've been staying up late and L hasn't been sleeping well. BUT, I think the vest will fit well and Hayden seems to like it. I'll try to take some pictures soon, but we're supposed to have ice and freezing rain all weekend. I'm headed out to get a few things (milk, eggs, etc.) so that we can be stuck in the house all weekend. We're supposed to have a birthday party tonight, but we'll just see how the roads are around 4:30. I don't want to get caught out when it hits. I also don't want to disappoint the 3 year old having the party!

New Leaf

As the new year approaches I'm trying to change things I'm not happy with. Here are a few new leaves I'm attempting to turn over...

1. I'm going to go on another yarn diet! I've made a couple of purchases lately when a shop in town was closing (50% off) so that I can make the Tangled Yoke Cardigan and Indigo Ripple skirt. These (along with all the sock yarn I have) will keep me busy for a long time! I do not need any yarn. As an incentive I will "pay" myself $20 a month for every month I stick to the diet. In December of 2008, if I've been a good girl, I should have $240 to spend on yarn. (This does include sock yarn! If I ever start knitting myself socks my drawer could be very full before I have to buy any new yarn.)

2. From above, I'm really going to knit a few things for myself. I love knitting for babies because it will eventually fit and they just look so darn cute in anything! However, it would be nice to benefit from my own needles. After the haze has lifted from my Christmas knitting I'll get more specific.

3. Learn new techniques. I made my first moebius this year and there are several other techniques I'm interested in trying... steeking is the first to come to mind.

4. I'd really like to knit for charity. My goal is to start a project after the first of the year and keep one charity knit on the needles at all times. I'm not sure if I'll go for one charity or several. I need to decide this.

5. Post on my blog in a much more regular manner! I've been a slacker and I need to get myself in gear. I'm shooting for at least 4 times a week. Hopefully, I'll have enough content to entertain anyone who happens to read this!

And, so I don't completely bore you with my list, here are some fo's!

Lainey's finished socks to go in her stocking. They're from Cascade 220. It's an easy pattern called Cabled Toddler Socks by Rosemary Waits.

There's also a pair for Hayden. I had to add two cables, but now it fits him great (with a little room to spare.) He also requested a red scarf. I used FrogTree Alpaca worsted and it's so soft!! A red vest was also on his list and I started one (designing my own) on Monday night. It's from Cascade 220 heathers in red, but not bright red like the socks and scarf. I'm about 6 inches or so into it and will take a picture if we ever have any decent light here. So far I like it AND think it might actually fit him! I need to have it washed and ready to wear by next Thursday for his Holiday program at preschool.

I've finished two pairs of Fiber Trends Felted Clogs... The grey pair is for my BIL and the "bright" pair is for my FIL (who requested an "absurd" color scheme. We'll see if this works for him.) I'm gifting them unfelted since I'll be there to help them felt.

Now, in addition to Hayden's vest I need to finish the second in a pair of socks, another pair of clogs and a pair of socks for my SIL. I see little sleep in my near future!

It is good knitting weather here though!

Times flies when you have a deadline!

I've been knitting away and can't believe how long it's been since I posted! It's not because I haven't been knitting either. I finished the Reid sweater for our goddaughter. We forgot our camera and used my in-laws, so I'm waiting for them to forward pictures to me. I think it turned our very cute! I made the 2 year old size and it was perfect for her (just a little big so she can wear it more.) One of our local LYSs is going out of business, so I bought some Catania in a pretty harvest orange color and hope to make one for Lainey. Maybe for her birthday....

I finished the first of three pairs of Fiber Trends Felted Clogs for Christmas. I'm going to gift them un-felted so that they can get a great fit. I'm also still working on my MILs socks. I finished a cute pair of cabled slipper socks for Lainey and am almost done with the first of a pair for Hayden. They will be in their stockings this year. I'm using Cascade 220 in bright red. I also have a pair of socks to knit for my SIL, but they may not be done on time... She might get felted slippers as well. Hayden also wants a red vest for Christmas, so I'm working on that too.

I've got several projects lined up for myself and am excited to get started. More about that when I can actually see the light! I "donated" knitting lessons to the silent auction at Hayden's preschool recently and just gave my first (of an unspecified number) on Sunday. We worked on long tail cast on and the knit stitch. She caught on quickly, but we're going to get together soon for a quick refresher.

Can't Believe It's Been This Long...

We've been to and returned from Philly, been sick and just overloaded with work (house and other kinds as well!) I can't believe it's been this long since my last post! Well, here are a few pictures for you. I've made a couple of trades on Ravelry, etc...

This is a skein of Fleece Artist Nova Sock yarn in Tangerine colorway all the way from Canada...A wonderfully "Smooshy" skein of Dream in Color Smooshy (blue lagoon colorway)...Ellen's Half Pint Merino/Nylon sock yarn in greens...

and blues.

I also finished another EZ February sweater. This one is in Louet Gems Opal. It's for a friend due November 1. The color is a bit darker than in the picture... more of a dusky violet.

I started my MILs Christmas socks with Online Supersocke Beach Cotton colorway 948. I'm just using a plain stockinette sock pattern since the yarn has enough interest itself.It was good knitting on the trip to Philly. Last night I cast on for ANOTHER February sweater that I'm donating to the Silent Auction that Hayden's preschool is having next week. After that I'll be back on Reid for our goddaughter. I've got the fronts done. The deadline is the 27th of October, so I have to get in gear!

Knitting Update

Let's see.. what has been added to the FO pile since my last post??? Camille's Birthday Hat is finished and will be gifted on Sunday. Lainey is modeling it below. She'd sit while I took the picture and then run over to look at it.

I'm working on Kate's Reid and have almost finished the 2nd front. It doesn't look like much now, but I'm hoping it fits after blocking. I've heard that the next too sizes are huge and Kate isn't too much bigger than Lainey. We also found out that Kate is going to have a little brother and little sister in December/January! Anyone have any cute baby sweaters to suggest that would look good together in pictures?? I think I see a pair of these in their future! Chris has come up with a cute sweater, but it will be a while before these will fit the twins.

I'm starting a quick February sweater for my friend Kerry who is due November 1. And I also need to get a sweater together to donate to Hayden's preschool silent auction. I'm thinking something machine washable. It may speak more to the parents there.

It's quiet here and the dishwasher is full, so off to start it and sit to knit!

Click Clack

I finished Lainey's hat. The pattern is Ela's Favorite Hat from One Skein Wonders. Iknit it in Patons SWS. The yarn was fine to knit with although a little splitty at times. She seems to really like it, so she'll be warm this winter. Hayden has a Noro ribbed hat that I knit several years ago that he wears and a red ribbed hat from Frog Tree Alpaca that is too warm to wear unless it's seriously cold out. I'm working on planning my knitting for our trip to the cabin and to PA for the wedding. I think I'll take the socks I'll be making for my MILs Christmas present (plain stockinette), the scarf for Hayden (red Cascade 220), and the baby sweater I'm making to donate to Hayden's preschool silent auction. (I'm also going to offer knitting lessons. Guess we'll find out if anyone is interested!) I'm sure I'll take something that needs a bit more thought, but since I get car sick I need something that I don't have to look at often.

Mean Green Baby Sweater

I finished Lainey's "February" sweater Sunday morning before church. She got to wear it and it was adorable... Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures that morning, but she did pose for me yesterday! If you tell her you're going to take a picture (whether you have a camera or not) and ask for a "big smile" you get this expression. So cute! The sweater went quickly. I really like this look... 3/4 sleeves and a bit cropped in the body.

Doug took H fishing last night, so L and I hung out. We ran to the grocery and decided to run by Michael's. They had a 50% off coupon for Sunday/Monday. I ended up with a new knitting bag for $12.50. They had just started carrying them and they're cute! They also have totes, needles cases and some smaller project holders. I'm always on the lookout for a cute knitting bag. I tend to go too large and then I end up with everything in it!

I also started Ela's Favorite Hat from One Skein Wonders in Patons SWS for Lainey. The blue matches her coat and she doesn't have a hat for this winter.

Speed Knitting

Wow! I've finished two WIPs since the weekend! I made a pair of Saartje's Booties for Bex's baby (who hasn't made his appearance yet! She is SO ready!) I used some Koigu that I got in New Orleans.I'm hoping to make a sweater for him for the spring since I'm sure he has plenty of little fall/winter sweaters to wear. I also gave back a sweater that she had loaned me from the shop. I've got matching yarn and since she's now stated that her husband isn't opposed to a boy wearing it (it has some small flecks of green, blue, pink and purple on a yellow base) I'm going to try to whip up another pair of bootees to match.

I also finished a sweater for Elsie, the daughter of good friends in KC. She's so beautiful and I was planning to make a Pea Pod set for her, but I've never been able to get it printed out (long story!) Instead, I checked out EZ's Knitter's Almanac (they haven't had it at the LYS, but it took a while to dawn on me that I could check it out from the library while I'm waiting! I'm a little slow to catch on at times! I blame it on the kids.) and knit up the "February" baby sweater out of Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece in Tea Rose. It was done in less than 3 days and I love the way it turned out. It even fit like a little 3/4 sleeve cardigan on Lainey.... SO, I started one in Cotton Ease (the green matches several of her dresses) with a larger gauge for her! We've got a wedding to go to in Philly in October and she needs a little sweater with her dress.

I've also got a pair of socks going that will probably be for Lainey. They aren't going to be quite large enough for Hayden, so his pair will come next.

A Finished Weasley

Lainey's sweater is finished! It's done blocking and I've tried it on Lainey (although she wouldn't hold still long enough for a picture.) It's in her room right now and she's sleeping, so I can't take any other pictures. It was a very quick knit and turned out well. It was nice to have a product that was finished in less than a week. Now I'll start Hayden's socks for his stocking. He asked for red, but I'm using a rainbow colored cotton/wool Sockotta yarn. I think he likes it so far.

I'm waiting to start Elsie's sweater since it won't take long. I want to make sure I make the right size. We'll see if she's growing as quickly as my kids or just at a normal pace! haha I've also been unable to get the pattern to print. I went to my mom's today and didn't know my password to log in to IK. Oh well, I'm planning to start it September 1st, after I finish a few other WIPs.

Knitting for Christmas

I'm getting ready for the holidays (in August with 100 degree weather outside) by beginning my Christmas knitting. I finished Lainey's dolly dress.

I've also started Lainey's Weasley sweater (it will have an L on the front). Other than the intarsia for the letter it's just straight stockinette. Should knit up quickly on size 9s. Hayden hasn't decided for sure what color he would like his to be, so I'll wait to get the yarn until he's ready. I'm also making a pair of socks for each stocking. (We started a tradition of new pjs for the kids in their stocking that they get to open on Christmas Eve and I decided I'd add a new pair of handknit socks to that tradition).

Am I the only one starting presents for the holidays?

Not much else going on. We've got playdates, swimming, etc. planned for this week, so I'm hoping to wear the kids out and have a little extra knitting time. hehehehe

I've got my sock pal socks!

I love them! They're knit with Fortissima Socka Mit Bambou (wool/nylon/bamboo) and they fit perfectly. The pattern is Thuja from Knitty. I love the yarn and the colors too! This is my first pair of handknit socks. I've knit them for many friends and family, but none for myself. I wore them around the house for quite a while before the 100 degree heat made me take them off. Thank you Wanda! You're fabulous! I greatly appreciate all the work you put into these socks... I couldn't ask for a better pair!She also included this skein of Trekking. I love the colors! I'm tagging it for the first pair of socks I make for myself. I've truly enjoyed Sockapalooza and will definitely take part next time!

Sock Pal has her socks...

I got an email Saturday night and they arrived! She liked what I sent, so I'm HAPPY! Now, I'm patiently awaiting socks from my pal. She could send me any color or pattern and I'd just be happy. It's so exciting! I will definitely be joining in for the next one.

I ended up starting a dress for Lainey's baby. I printed out several patterns the other day and the computer crashed right as I was getting to the Pea Pod set. Off I go to work on the doll dress while Lainey is taking a nap and Hayden plays with his cousin.

The Finished Product

Here they are along with a few other things I'm sending... I know we don't have to send anything other than socks, but I thought I'd surprise her with a few little things. I included a skein of yarn and a set of stitchmarkers that I made for her. Two of her colors were blues and pinks. When I saw the blue beads with pink flowers I knew they were meant for her! I also included extra yarn from her socks, although I kept some and am planning to make something with it... I'm not sure what.. a mini sock? We never got around to picking up the honey candies though.

And, we found out that our friends in KC had a baby girl... Elsie Marie! I'm planning on the Pea Pod set for them, but I got the cutest little dress with floral embroidery on the yoke at BabyGap for cheap. Now I'm thinking maybe a little shrug to go with the dress or keeping the dress for our friends expecting twins or some other future babe. Who knows! Our printer isn't working, so I can't start the Pea Pod until I get to my mom's tomorrow and print it off. Guess I'll knit up a little baby outfit for Lainey's naked doll.

Life is Good

And, I get to start reading the 7th Harry Potter book. I know some people have no interest, but I've really enjoyed them. My husband was skeptical when I read the first one, but when the second one came out he decided he should find out what all the talk was about and read the first two. Now he's just as much a fan as I am! We've enjoyed the movies as well.

It's been so hot here for the last few days and doesn't look like it will cool down. The rec center we belong to has the pool closed right now for cleaning and annual maintenance, but it should reopen next week. We've just been hanging out inside playing playdough, etc. I can't wait for Fall! Then we'll hit the park almost every day and can resume our nightly walks.

Just a little over a month and Hayden will be starting preschool. He's very excited! So am I! Lainey and I will have some time together alone. Right now she's very interested in the potty (she's only 16 months old, but we're going with it for now.) She's made several "deposits", but I wouldn't say she's near potty trained. I'm waiting for some training pant covers to arrive. Apparently, I'm the odd one out since "everyone" wants to use disposable training pants. I found the little padded underwear at Target, but none of the vinyl covers. Once they arrive we'll ditch the diapers except for naptime and bedtime. I'm torn between my baby growing up too fast and the "dream" of no diapers to change (or buy!) Below is Hayden with our goddaugther. He's very secure in his boyhood!

The end is in sight

What a crazy, busy, exciting week! I won a lifetime pass to the Missouri Theatre! They have a symphony, put on other concerts, work with a local indie theatre to show some movies and provide theatre space for the True/False Film Festival that is held here every year, and host many other events. It was built in the 20's and is a beautiful old theatre. It's now closed for the next 10 months while they restore and renovate it to its previous glory! Since I'm from here and we have no plans to move, they're going to be stuck with me! We'll still have to buy a ticket for Doug or the kids, but I hope Doug can watch the kids sometimes while I go alone.

I've also watched my cousin's 7 month old son this week while his daycare was closed. Busy, but fun week with him. He's just starting to military crawl and he was all over the place!

I'm in the straightaway on the socks... So far I've enjoyed the Magic Loop.I have a bit of a ladder on the sole, but am hoping it will even out when they get a bath in a night or two. This is the last time I'll be modelling... My SPs feet are smaller than mine! (Fairly easy to do since I wear a women's size 11!) I've made some stitchmarkers to send with the socks and have a couple of other little things to go as well. We need to run out to a local honey producer and pick up some honey candies to send along. I'm going to start a Weasley sweater for Lainey (christmas present) and a Reid for our goddaughters birthday. We also have some friends that are due any minute. Once we find out what they have I'll be making a Pea Pod baby set for this fall.

Last night I watched HP and the Goblet of Fire again in preparation to see the Order of the Phoenix sometime soon. We're hoping we can get away later in the week for an afternoon matinee and dinner at our favorite Thai restaurant. We'll see if it happens! Doug finished book 7 and I'm hoping to start it soon as well.

I've also continued putting in too much time on Ravelry. I have most of my stash photographed and entered. I've got a huge queue of patterns I'd like to (eventually) knit. I hope it's open to the public soon. There are still things to fix and add, but it's going to be/is a great site!

On to the heel...

I've finally gotten to the heels! It always seems like they go so quickly from this point on. Tonight I'll be up until I get the heels turned and all my stitches picked up. I've also got the 7th Harry Potter book sitting here staring at me... But, I won't start it until the socks are done. Besides, I told Doug he could read it first.
And, this is why I've been moving so slowly! She's getting molars and having separation anxiety. Last night I'd had it with her getting up. She just wasn't happy with much of anything. I decided it was time to night wean (maybe wean completely, but since we're not having any more kids I hate to go that far yet. I love breastfeeding!) I decided to tell her that "they" were sleeping... This did not go over well! After about 20 minutes of crying, rocking and trying to console her I just put her in the crib so I could rub her back. That started a whole new tantrum. So, I left the room. Doug was awake and offered to go in. He walked into her room and told her it was time to sleep, she pointed at the door and said "mama" to which he replied that I was sleeping. She laid down and we didn't hear another peep until 7:45 a.m.! He is hired!!!

Not much going on over here. I've been trying to get in my 5 rows each night, but between the Police concert, recovering from lack of sleep and prepping for a garage sale I've been slacking on the knitting. Now that's done and I'm cleaning house, washing laundry and just trying to catch up on everything else. Tomorrow will begin my renewed effort to knit like a fiend! So, off I go to finish the chores. I'll post pics of the sock (at least you can tell a difference) tomorrow and maybe even a few of the clean and reorganized knitting/craft room. I can almost see the desk now and I just keep adding to the Goodwill pile (or maybe another garage sale!!)

Dream...

In Color is such great yarn! I've lived up to my 5 rows on each sock per knit so far. My only problem is that my yarnovers vary in size so much. I'm even wrapping the K-YO-P under/over and back again (1 1/4 wrap) and the P-YO-K the same so that they use the same amount of yarn and they still don't look close in size. Hope my sock pal doesn't mind! I still think they look good though.

And I just got a surprise handcarried back from Ireland! Doug's bandmate, Bruce, and his wife, Susan, just returned from their second trip to Ireland. We went for two weeks for our honeymoon and can't wait until the kids are a bit older so we can go back and take them with us! I didn't knit on that trip we made. I started about 4 months after that. But check out the beautiful 100% wool they picked up at Blarney Woolen Mills!It was spun in Co. Donegal. Each skein is 100 g.... Now, must, put, with, stash... Must, finish, socks! I knew Doug had asked them to bring him some whiskey (Powers 12 year for anyone that enjoys it.)

One of the kids is in bed now and the other is having a fit. We'll see if she'll go to sleep soon so I can get started on my requisite 10 rows! I doubt I'll get it done tomorrow. We're going to St. Louis to the Police concert with another couple! Can't wait!

Trying to get back on track

I'm done with the 2nd Ballet T-Shirt (for Sophia) and here is a picture of Camille wearing it for me! Now, to get back on the Sockapalooza socks. There will be no other projects until they're done! hahahahahaha Oh, can I really stick to this? I've got them next to my "spot" on the couch and once everyone is in bed I'm picking them up. 5 rows each sock minimum per night!

I'm hoping to get the Clapotis done by August 1 as well. I've got so many other projects that I want to start! I'm working on Ravelry as well. Maybe I'll get a good day and get some stash pictures taken. Doug's out for the evening, Lainey is asleep and Hayden is headed that way. Better get moving on my socks!

Where does the time go?

Too much going on, none to do with knitting. Lainey is cutting molars/dealing with a head cold. Hayden is just being 4. I've become a Mary Kay consultant (realized that 37 was a "mature" age and I should start taking care of my skin.) I'm not really into the hard sell, sell, sell. I was shown the products by a friend and liked them. Never in a million years would I picture myself doing this... but I am. We'll see how it goes. Now, I have a head cold that Lainey so lovingly shared with me (molars = lots of drool!)

I'm working on my sock pal socks (very little) and another ballet t-shirt for a birthday present for Sophia. I'm about 1/3 of the way done and hope to finish it this weekend. Then I'll get back on track with the socks. Most available time has been sucked up by Ravelry.com! I've still got quite a bit to enter and a lot of pictures to take. We've also been outside playing, going for walks, etc.

Have You Received an Invite?

I just got my invitation to join Ravelry.com a few days ago! If you haven't been added to the list, DO. Even though it's by invitation only at this point, it's wonderful! I've been adding my stash and library. I'm trying to get some pictures of finished and in progress projects to add. I can't wait until it's open to everyone! (I'm having problems getting the pictures to fit... then when I recenter the pics they don't stay that way. Guess that's just part of being in the testing phase!)

So, as for actual knitting... I finished a Ballet T-shirt from Loop de Loop for Lainey a little over a week ago. I had some Blue Heron beaded cotton in the Cooper colorway. It turned out so cute! I'm making another right now for Sophia's birthday. I'm working on my Waving Lace socks as well, but needed some more immediate gratification!

Rippin' n' Rollin'

Well, this is the Jaywalker... At least I found out how much my gauge changes when I use Magic Loop now instead of when it was done! I've decided that I do need a break from them, so I've put them aside and will pick them up after my sockpals socks are finished.

I've also (re)started my sockpal socks (after L removed them from the dpns). I LOVE the yarn! The color is gorgeous and it's so soft and squishy. The pattern is fun as well. Waving Lace from Favorite Socks. I did a few rows on dpns, then switched to Magic Loop. Maybe it's the fact it's lace (Jaywalkers don't have much give anyway) I'm already planning my little care package to go with the socks. I'm going to include a few stitchmarkers that I made, maybe some chocolates from a local chocolate store... Just a few little things to go with the socks. I'm going to have to do this again next year! It's so much fun planning a surprise for someone!

Little Problem (little sock)

Well, I'm decreasing at the gusset and decided to try the sock on last night just to get an idea of fit... it won't go on my foot. Now, I'm not horribly worried. I have HUGE feet. Size 11 women's, but I have doubts that they'll fit my mom either. I think these may end up going to my SIL (tiny woman) for Christmas -- which is fine since she was getting a pair of socks anyway. Luckily, they're coming into town for the holiday this weekend, so I'll be able to have her try it on and see if it will work for her. If not, I'll spend my holiday frogging. I finally got the needles for my sock pal socks (started on dpns, but L pulled them out when my back was turned.) I've been waiting for size 2 circs (47") to come in at the LYS. I got Addi Lace needles in 2 and 3, both 47". Now, if the Jaywalker has to be ripped, then they'll just wait while I work on sock pal socks. I'm actually quite anxious to get back to them. Maybe I'll just go ahead and start them again after the kids are in bed tonight...

Great to Be Home

We had a fabulous time in New Orleans, but it's good to be home! The flights were fine, weather was perfect and we walked until our feet hurt. Doug's co-workers are a lot of fun (much more than us.. we were in before midnight each night.) Judy, who's in charge of arranging everything for the meeting did an amazing job (as usual). The last meeting was on the Riverwalk in San Antonio. It was fun as well, but I was pregnant with Lainey.

One of the highlights (can't say the best, but only because I don't want to hurt Doug's feelings! ) was meeting up with Christina to knit at Cafe du Monde. She emailed me about some yarn that I had for sale on Destash. When she sent me her address I realized that SHE LIVES IN NEW ORLEANS! I emailed her and asked if she'd be interested in meeting up and I could hand deliver the yarn. Luckily, she didn't think I was (too) weird... We met up and had cafe au lait and beignets while we both worked on our STR socks. I'm so jealous... she's in the Rockin' Sock Club. I just didn't get into socks in time to sign up before it was closed for the year. Her socks are beautiful and I love the yarn and pattern... Maybe next year! After we knit for a while we walked over to Quarterstitch, the LYS in the French Quarter. It's a tiny store, but they have some beautiful yarn. I ended up with some Koigu (above) to make socks for me (browns/pinks & solid pink) and Doug (blues/solid blue). The top skein is some Mama E's C*Eye*Ber Fiber Sock yarn in Indian Corn colorway. (It didn't come from New Orleans, but I hadn't shown it yet.) Christina got a skein of recycled sari yarn. It's beautiful stuff! As we were leaving the store we saw Jerry Springer. We stood outside the store debating.. him, not him. We were pretty sure it was him, but our suspicions were confirmed when some guys working next door started yelling "Jerry". He waved just a bit and another woman snapped a picture as she walked by. Unfortunately, neither of us had cameras with us. You should definitely check out Christina's blog! She was planning to go Saturday night to get a tattoo and there are pictures on her blog. It's amazing! I didn't get as much knitting done as I thought I would, but I did make it to the gusset on the first Jaywalker.

We found cute t-shirts for the kids. Hayden's is a pirate shirt (cartoonish skull and two pirate ships - pillage. plunder. pillage. plunder). Lainey's is a cartoon crayfish and says "Who's your crawdaddy?" And, of course, we brought home pralines (for us and the grandparents).

We also stopped for a couple of hours in KC after we got back to visit Greg and Sara. They're due in July and she's just so darn cute! We don't get to see them often, but they are always fun. Sounds like they (or at least Greg - just depends on how she's feeling) will be coming to the CD release party on June 2 for Doug's band, Celandine. I think it's going to be a great time!

Lots of Jaywalking

I've been working on the Clapotis and the Jaywalkers as much as possible. It is so hard to photograph the colors in this yarn! You either get this (flash outside - way too bright) or (no flash outside). The Jaywalkers pattern is so easy to remember, but looks more complicated (at least to non-knitters). I'm enjoying the Magic Loop and may try to do it for two socks next time. I can't decide if these are going to be for me or my mother. Guess we'll have to see if she likes them or not. Her feet are a bit smaller than mine, but not too much.

Apparently, she wore her last pair to the Gyn for her annual. As she's on the table with her feet in the stirrups her Gyn asked if she'd knit her socks. A discussion of my knitting hobby followed and my mom could just picture her staring at the socks. (She commented that the "stitches were so even!") She's a knitter as well, but I think mom said she does afghans. Maybe mom needs a new pair for Christmas to wear for her next appointment.

The Clapotis is coming along fine. I'm trying to do one section each night (the reward is getting to drop the stitch!) The Jaywalker is my "grab a few minutes" knitting during the day. I'm trying to decide what to take on the trip this weekend. I'm worried about having trouble taking my needles, so I may take the Jaywalker off the #1 circular and move to bamboo dpns. I'm planning to pack a SASE in case they won't let me take something on. Keep your fingers crossed! I know they're supposed to let you, but I haven't flown out of KCI for a very long time (15 years or so.)

Happy Mother's Day!

What a great day! Doug got up with L and took her downstairs in the morning (I think that's the first time I didn't get up with her.) She was fine with it and when H got up he came in and snuggled, then went downstairs with them. I stayed in bed and knit for a while, then when I was getting hungry we went out to breakfast. We went to see Doug's parents and grandparents for lunch and then came home for a rest. We had dinner at Subway and then ice cream at Baskin Robbins! The only downside was I lost my keys! Searched all day and was so confused... I used them to get in the house Saturday evening! Finally, right before bedtime, I found them on my bed under a sweater! I could have sworn I moved that sweater and I know I didn't sleep with them there. I guess I'm losing my mind at the ripe old age of 37!

I'll post pictures of socks soon! Today we're off to visit friends, drop H at a neighbors to go swimming and pick up our little friend, S, from preschool. Only a few more days until we go to New Orleans, so I'm not sure how much knitting will be happening before. I have to clean, do laundry and get packed.

MMMmmmmm, yarn.....

I cast on for my Sockpals socks. I'm using the Waving Lace Socks pattern from Favorite Socks. (They're the ones on the cover.) I hope to show some progress soon. I had a little help removing one from the needles (L loves yarn!) I didn't have the brain power to work on it last night, so I started a Jaywalker with STR in G-Rocks using Magic Loop. I haven't started Doug's socks because I need to go get some dpns in a different size. The colors in the picture are much brighter than they really are. No morning light, just foggy and grey here at the moment.

I started my Clapotis a few days ago (since I couldn't start Doug's socks). I'm using Brooks Farm Four Play in Nantucket. This yarn is so soft and beautifully colored! It's going well. I'm trying to get one dropped row done each day. It's good knitting while we watch TV after the kids are in bed or when I have an odd moment during the day.I'm finally getting over this crazy sinus infection. I've been sick for almost 3 weeks. Hopefully, I'll be completely over it by the time we leave for New Orleans! (Next weekend)

I hope everyone has a wonderful Mother's Day. Mom's make the world go round! H said he wants to get us and come crawl in bed with me while Doug gets up with L. I haven't been able to lounge in bed since I had H over 4 years ago. I'm all for it! We'll also be seeing my mom and my grandmother! They're both great women (and mothers).

Socks, Socks, Socks

Well, here is a picture of the Opal socks (very boring to knit stockinette, but very UN-boring stripes!) When I showed them to Becky the other day and she tried one on they were "her". She's a very natural person and she's a musician. They just said "I am Becky". On a side note, I just want to state that matching socks is not a big deal to me. I like pooling. But these started out perfectly! Until, the toe... see the grey stripe and blue stripe next to each other? The blue stripe starts grey for a round or so, then turns blue... What happened there? There weren't any breaks in the yarn? I actually like it, but I was quite confused as I was knitting!
Now, I'm starting two pairs of socks... One for hubby (to wear when he goes fly fishing - under his waders). I'm using Prairie Silks in red, grey and black and I'm using the resoleable pattern from the Favorite Socks book. The other pair is for my Sock Pal. I'm still vacillating on the pattern (I've got two Cookie A. patterns that I think would work well, but there are several lacy patterns in Favorite Socks that are nice.) I decided to go ahead and start Doug's pair so that when I didn't have the mind for a chart I'd have some plain stockinette to fall back on. I've also got 3 months to finish the SP socks and I don't want to finish them too fast and just look at them until August 2.

I somehow don't see Sahara being finished before our trip to New Orleans. Oh well, it will be started sometime soon.

Oh, I already sold some yarn (Lorna's Laces, some Frog Tree and Elsebeth Lavold). Mom is coming over today and I'm going to run to the P.O. to mail. I'll just wait patiently to see if I hear from anyone else. I've also got a few other things to post. If they don't move in the next week or two I may try placing them on EBay. It's always so hard to get rid of things, but once you start doing it (whether it's a garage sale, salvation army or on the web), it feels good!

It's dreary and rainy here today! Hope someone is enjoying some sunshine today!

SSP and Destashing a Bit

I've contacted my Secret Sock Pal and I've picked out the yarn. It's Dream in Color yarn in the Some Summer Sky colorway. I think my SSP will like it! I'm still trying to decide on the pattern. After that the only thing left is to cast on and get started!

I'm also going to try to destash a bit. I've got a lot of Frog Tree alpaca, Noro, Elsebeth Lavold, Brown Sheep and a few other miscellaneous things that I don't envision using anytime soon. I need to make some space for all the things that I really do want to keep. I've posted pictures and prices on Flickr.com. Shipping is included to the continental U.S.

Sockapalooza 4

Well, we have been matched with our Secret Sock Pals. I've got two Cookie A. patterns that I'm trying to decide between (my SSP likes lace). She also likes wool in pinks, blues or jewel-tones. So, although I already have a pattern, I need to find yarn. I have sock yarn, but not really any in the colors she prefers. hhhmmm, I'll have to give it some thought!

Silly Me

We stayed up until almost 1 a.m. Friday night watching movies.

First, we had movie night with H. Every 4-6 weeks or so we either rent or buy a new kids movie, have pizza (or some other favorite meal of his), get on our pjs and snuggle up on the couch to watch a movie. Friday night was "Night at the Museum". His favorite part... Anything with the T-Rex. It was a movie that we all enjoyed. After he was in bed we watched Casino Royale (I love James Bond movies! Daniel Craig does an excellent job!) I loved the movie and I'm glad I got to see it, but staying up until 1 was not a great idea. I worked on the sock during both movies (finished the gusset and am almost to the toe decreases), but the movies were so exciting that I think I used a little extra torque with the yarn and needles. I don't do this with other projects, but I seem to knit tight on socks anyway.

Then, after dinner last night we put L in the stroller and the four of us walked to the custard shop (a little over a mile each way) to meet my brother, SIL and nephew. The custard was delicious and we got a good amount of exercise!

SO... this morning my arms are killing me from knitting so hard on Friday. Luckily, our friend Becky is in town right now (she's in hubby's band and was at the birth of L). She's a licensed massage therapist and in a hour or so I will be on her table turning into Jello! She's actually the recipient of the socks, so I'm hoping that I'll come home refreshed from my massage and can finish off the sock before they have band practice tonight. I started the socks as a gift to her for being at the birth (her massage and Doug's ice feeding and support were what enabled me to go natural with the birth) and they've taken a long time! They're ready to go home with her!

I hope to post soon with pictures of the next project(s)!

Road to Recovery

L and I came down with head colds on Sunday. Hers hasn't been nearly as bad as mine. I've been so congested that I thought it might take dynamite to get some air through. I'm finally feeling better. L is still breastfeeding, so I'm sure that's what saved her. I turned around after she finally slept well for a night (Wednesday night - 8p.m. to 8 a.m. with one wake up to nurse at 5:30! Sleeping was going better, then we got sick... I'm hoping we can get more rest this weekend!)

Anyway, not a lot of knitting going on and nothing worthy of pictures. I'm working on the Opal socks and re-reading Harry Potter. I'm hoping the socks will be done by Sunday so that I can start another pair (Coriolis sock by Cat Bordhi is a possibility). I'm also leaning towards a pair of Jaywalkers. Something a bit more interesting that straight stockinette! I was also looking around the other day and realized that the LoopyEwe is in St. Louis. They have an amazing selection of sock yarn and patterns! Then, when I've returned to my normal self, I'll start on Sahara. I'm beginning to doubt it will be ready for our trip to New Orleans. I may just go ahead and start on my Clapotis. I'll decide soon. I've also sent and email trying to join Destash - Cash for Yarn. I'm going to try to whittle down my yarn stash, some needles and, possibly, a few books. We'll see if I'm accepted!

No Sahara Yet

I'm sure I'm just biased, but are these not the sweetest feet you've ever seen! I could just eat those little rolls on her ankles. The Sahara has been sidelined for a few days because I decided that she needed an equally sweet pair of socks for those toes. I'm using a pattern (changed for a larger size, etc. Basically I just used the idea and went from there.) from the latest Debbie Bliss book and some baby cashmerino that I had in stash. I know a lot of people have problems with DB patterns, but this is the first one that I just haven't liked. I wanted a little something before I knuckle down and work on Sahara. I figure I'll wait until I can have some alone time this weekend to get started.

Here are the finished socks... (They're cuter than they show in the picture. I had trouble getting her to hold still long enough to snap a picture.) They'll keep those piggies warm and feel so soft for her. I'm sure she'll outgrow them quickly, although there is a bit of extra room, and I'll have to make another pair for the Fall, but they were pretty quick so I don't mind. H wants a pair of socks as well. He's requested that his be red (it's all about red.... red sheets, shoes, sweats, t-shirts. Our house would be red if he could convince me. I keep thinking he'll outgrow the red phase, but it's been this way for 2 years. Half of his life has been devoted to his search for red... He cracks me up!)

Also, still plugging along on my pair of Opal socks. I'm ready to start the heel, but just haven't done it yet. Maybe I just need to get it done before I start my Sahara... then, I can start another pair of socks (for my secret sock pal??) before we go on our trip to New Orleans in May. Usually socks don't take me this long, but I think it's just the plain stockinette. I'm looking forward to something with a pattern and trying toe-up.

Green Gable

It's finally finished! It's been a slow week for knitting and it seems like it's taken forever. Here's a quick picture of it blocking, but I'll take a picture of it on once it's dry. I added about an inch of lenth, but the rest is by the pattern. I stayed up late to get it done.
I also finished a swatch for Sahara last week, but my gauge was off. I'm going to swatch again on size 7s and see what I get. I'm hoping to start the Sahara tomorrow.

Also, on a non-knitting note... We've finally gotten around to the sleep issue with L. We had her 1 year appointment last week and I spoke with the Dr. about it. All of her teeth have come in, no sicknesses about and we started letting her fuss. I appreciate both sides of this argument and we've tried many different things before we started this. We kept her up an extra 30 minutes Friday night. It took about 45 minutes for her to go to sleep with us entering after 3 minutes, then 5 minutes and then 10 minute increments until she was asleep. She was up 3 times in the night. Each time she was back down in less than 10 minutes total. I only nursed her once over the course of the night (it was quite a feat with her standing in her crib... anyone who has nursed a toddler can attest to the gymnastics sometimes needed!) She woke for the final time at 7:30 a.m. Her naps went well too. I went in once after 3 minutes for the first and didn't have to go in again at all for the second. She seems to be catching on well. Bedtime went better tonight. I went in twice with the timing lenthened a bit and she was asleep within 20 minutes. I'm trying not to be overly optimistic, but think we're on the right path (finally!)

Oh, I joined the Sockapalooza 4 last night. I can't wait to see who my secret sock pal will be!

Ready to Start Sahara

My KnitPicks replacement needles came in the mail on Monday. I'm going to try to swatch for the Sahara soon, but I haven't decided if I want to finish Green Gable before I actually start another project. I've taken the sleeves off the needles and just finished one of them (so I can see how it looks the next time I try it on). I'm sure it will go much faster now since I only have 180 stitches going.

We've had a huge cool off weather wise and will be having temps in the mid to upper twenties for the next few nights. Guess it's a good thing I've been busy knitting and haven't had time to plant anything yet. I'm trying to decide if I'll actually have a garden this year. Maybe just tomatoes. H has decided that he loves cucumbers now. He even tried some lettuce and said he liked it. He's always loved veggies and fruits, but those are two things that he's never liked. Guess turning 4 changes things (he keeps telling me he can do "XXXX" now that he's four.) He knows his ABC's, can count to 50 (he still misses 15 sometimes) and can spell and write his first name.

Does anyone have any suggestions for teaching kids to knit? My neighbor's daughter is 5 and she wants to learn. I've got yarn and needles for her, but need a little help on the best way to approach this. I've had some adults that have trouble with a slip knot for the long tail cast on (I pulled up a video link for the LTCO and they didn't use a slip knot. Was I taught something weird?)

I had 4 kids in the house (4 mo, 1 yo, and 2 4 yos) for part of the day yesterday. I'm hoping the two little ones take coinciding naps again (2 hours Tuesday, but the littlest slept for 3 hours.) I was able to clean up the house a bit, start laundry and still had some time to knit.

No Knitting, but Lots of Fun

Yesterday was a crazy day! Doug's gone, so the kids and I took a trip to St. Louis to visit a few friends and a new baby, stop by the Zoo, eat too much, shop at Trader Joe's and get caught in several huge storms/downpours. We left at 9:15 Saturday a.m. and got home around 10:30 Saturday night. It was a long day for all of us, but we had a lot of fun! I managed about two rows on the Green Gable before bed last night, but I didn't figure I'd have much time for knitting. I'm hoping for a nap today and kids to bed early. No real progress to show!

No Swatches Here

My patterns came in the mail on Wednesday. I got my Frog Tree and KnitPicks Options out yesterday and prepared to cast on for my swatch for Sahara... Then I realized that one of my #6 needles wouldn't tighten down. I tried it on a different cable, but, apparently, it's stripped. I called them and they're sending another set out right away. Great customer service!

Instead, I started on the Green Gable sweater from Zephyr. I think I can probably finish it before my needles arrive. I'm using Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece in Rue (not quite as bright as it shows here). I only need 3 skeins. $24 for a cute summer sweater? Not bad! I'm using up stash, so the diet has begun. I did order a couple of other patterns from kpixie.com... Wicked by Zephyr and the Little Lacy Top. And the Allhemp3 yarn in Aubergine for the Little Lacy Top. This sweater will be for our trip to New Orleans in May, so I don't really count it towards stash (just buying a sweater that I'll knit versus buying pre-made.)

They'll probably be here today or tomorrow. No late night knitting tonight. I've got to turn in early so that I'm not too tired on our trip to St. Louis tomorrow. We're going to go visit some friends, maybe drop by the Zoo (depending on the weather) or the Science Center and go by Trader Joe's on our way home. We need a little trip to break up our weekend without Doug.

Finally Fini

I finished the Wine and Roses mitts last night! Blocked, dried and ready to wrap up for the giftee. I hope she likes them! I enjoyed the pattern and definitely plan on making a pair for myself (out of my stash). My only problem was that if I even attempted to knit on them (other than a few stockinette rows) I would mess something up and have to tink back. I've not done a lot of lacework (no big lace shawls here), but did enjoy it. I think I need to wait until the kids are a bit older though. Today is my L's first birthday! I had just gone to the dr to discuss being induced and we set it up for two days later. (My son was 9 1/2 pounds and 2 weeks early.) Because of some problems I had about a week after he was born (vaginal hematoma that ruptured and emergency surgery - I don't recommend it!) they were a bit concerned that we might have problems if she was also big. But, she knew what she was doing! 10 p.m. that night, my water broke. By midnight my contractions had started and I had her (naturally) at 3:30 a.m. She was 9 pounds even and 21 inches long. No complications this time! She's beautiful and healthy AND she just started walking everywhere. She's also trouble! I'm hoping to swatch for my Sahara and (possibly) start on my Clapotis. I also had to clean up the house a bit, bake a cake (see cake smeared on baby above!) and prepare for our little birthday party tonight. I'm guessing there won't be too much time for knitting today, but if I can at least get the swatch finished I'll be happy. Doug leaves tomorrow afternoon and won't be home until Sunday.

KAL and DAL

I'm so fickle when it comes to my knitting! I've discussed quite a few "nexts", but now I really know what is coming up... I joined the Sexy Knitters KAL to knit Sahara. We've got a weekend trip to New Orleans coming up in May and I've been thinking this might be a cute sweater for the trip. I read about the KAL on M's Musings and immediately decided to go for it. Now, I'm no where NEAR built like the model, but with either a camisole or changing the neckline a bit so it's not quite so low I think it will work out well. I don't have cause for many evening clothes, but there will be two evening functions while we're on our trip. I've got some Frog Tree pima/silk blend yarn in a very pretty deep purple that I think will work well. The yarn that they call for (Tilli Thomas) is beautiful, but too expensive for my wallet. I like the beaded trim on the pattern, but I'd get more wear from it if I don't have beaded trim. I guess I'll just wait until the pattern arrives and see if the pattern for the edging is interesting enough without beads. I can't tell if it's just garter or something else. If it does need the sparkle maybe I can find some beads to add to the yarn I'm planning to use.

I got some more sock yarn off Ebay yesterday. Two skeins of Lorna's Laces and two more skeins of Cherry Tree Hill. Red... and rose/burnt orange. I'm waiting for some #1 40" circulars to come in the LYS so I can try my hand at knitting two socks on circulars.

I have also signed up for the Stash DAL (Diet A Long). Beginning April 1 my stash diet begins. My rules are:

1. My Yarn Diet A Long will start April 1, 2007 and run through December 31, 2007 -- a period of nine months.

2. I will not buy any yarn during that period, with the following exceptions:
2.a. Sock yarn does not count. (I'm not exactly sure why, but I'll stick with that. I can't buy any sock yarn though until at least 2 pairs of socks are finished.)
2.b. If someone asks for a specific knitted gift that I really and truly do not have the yarn for, we may buy yarn to knit that gift.
2.c. If I am knitting something and run out of yarn, I may purchase enough to complete the project.
2.d. I am allowed to "fall off the wagon" during my trip to New Orleans IF I am good until that trip AND I find yarn that I've never knit with or cannot obtain at my LYS.

3. I am allowed to receive gifts of yarn or spend money received as a gift on yarn.

4. Trading stash is allowed.

5. Patterns, needles, books and other items needed to assist me in using up stash are okay.

Tonight I'm going to settle in after the kids are in bed, watch a movie with hubby and work on the Wine and Roses mitt. My goal is to get it finished before bed tomorrow... we'll see if the little ones let me accomplish that. Next week is spring break here and Doug is leaving town Thursday evening. I'm hoping that means lots of knitting after the kids are in bed! We're also planning a little jaunt to St. Louis on Saturday. I'm hoping to drop by the zoo, visit some friends and make a stop at Trader Joe's.

I Need to Knit

First, I want to thank Chris for her support of my proposed cry it out method for L. It helps to have someone make you feel a little bit less of a bad guy for having your own needs too. We've implemented nursing before bed in the living room and Doug putting her to bed. She's thrown quite a hissy the last couple of nights, but went down without a peep tonight. She was up a bit last night, but we had thunderstorms and (unlike her brother) she does not like them. After I nursed her though, she sacked out until 7:15 this morning! It probably helped that I had avoided nursing her until that point. I also appreciated the time that Trish (her profile isn't enabled, so I don't really know who she is) took to supply me with links to multiple articles discussing the problems with crying it out and brain development. I did read as many as I was able to actually pull up, but feel that I've tried just about everything I can. My daughter is thriving, VERY loved and developing well (she's got 7 words already!)

Anyway... On to knitting! I'm having the overwhelming urge to knit. Since I haven't had too much time to actually pick up the yarn and needles, I started planning my Christmas knitting already. Since Doug, his dad and brother have each received a pair of socks (Opal self striping), I'm planning to knit a pair for his mother and SIL. I saw the Canal du Midi socks on Grumperina's blog and thought they would be great for Doug's mom. I've got some Lorna's Laces in Periwinkle that I think would look great! I haven't decided what pattern to use for my SIL. I'll probably use some Cherry Tree Hill Supersock that should be arriving any day. I think I'll be making Fiber Trends Felted Clogs for his dad and brother. I'm also planning to learn the circular for two sock method (doesn't look too hard, but I've yet to cast on... figure I should finish the current pair of socks first.) I'm hoping to stave of the 2nd sock syndrome. Doug's going to get a nice, thick pair of wool socks to wear when he's camping, fishing or just lounging around the house. I've had the yarn for them for a while, but just haven't gotten around to it.

Unfortunately, no pictures of quickly expanding WIPs today.

Up and At'em

After a fitfully night, we're up for the day. I think it will be a sock day (too tired for the mitt, but I need something to keep my mind off how tired I am.) How can two children be so different sleep wise? H slept through the night at 3 months, immediately reverts to sleeping well after sickness or teething, rarely gets up and goes right back to sleep in minutes when he does! L has only had 5 or less 9 hour stretches EVER and she'll be a year old next week! We've tried everything (No Cry Sleep Solution, Co-Sleeping...) but may have to resort to letting her cry it out. We actually started this and the second night she slept 9 hours, but then we all ended up sick, teething or both. I hate leaving her to cry, but sleep is starting to win out. Over a year of no good sleep will do that to you... (BTW, just want to clarify... I'm fine if she's up at night, but we're both getting so much broken sleep it's not helping either of us! 4-5 times a night when she's not sick is too much.)

On the positive side, she is finally starting to nap a bit better. Which means, if the night hasn't been too bad and H is playing in his room (and all my "chores" are caught up - at least to a tolerable level) then I get to knit. I wish I could nap, but between H, 3 cats and a dog it doesn't usually work out. Knitting is better anyway!

My Birthday Boy

H turned four on Friday! We started out Thursday with a shared party for him and his Great Grandma. She turned 87. During the party L took her first steps! Great Grandma and Great Grandpa gave her a birthday gift since she'll be 1 soon. Her first baby doll (I see a few knitted outfits in the future. ) Great Grandma even crocheted a little blanket/bag for baby to be wrapped in!She loves her baby and starts looking for it when you ask her where baby is. She doesn't want it to be too far away though! Below she's blowing kisses... She loves her big brother and he'll give her a hug and kisses, then she'll turn around a blow kisses back to him! Then something like this happens... he smacked her earlier today when I wasn't looking. I heard a noise and then she started crying... finally got him to tell me that instead of gently rubbing her cheek he decided to put a little force behind it. Deep breath! It's tough being 4 with a baby sister! He did get in trouble, but we talked about telling the truth, hurting others and the consequences if it happens again. He had some big tears in his eyes when I explained that L trusts him to take care of her, not hurt her and that she might lose that trust if he treats her that way. That seemed to really get him. Anyone else have any experience with sibling rivalry? I'm open to suggestions!!

Not much on the knitting front. Doug is playing poker tonight, so I got about 45 minutes on the mitt. Now I'm going to turn in. We're having a pirate party tomorrow afternoon with about 9 or 10 little kids. I'll need my wits about me!

Two Down, One to go

I finished the pair of Fetching mitts last night. (The color shown isn't even close! It's more of an eggplant color.) I dropped them off to the giftee this morning (Grandma Ellen). I'm hoping to find time this weekend to finish (or at least work on) the second Wine and Roses mitt. I'd like to get these finished, but I can't knit on them when the kids are up. L has been up a lot lately and I just haven't been able to pick it up.

I'm planning on swatching for the Dandelion sweater out of the Spring Rowan. I'll keep you posted whenever that gets started. Otherwise, not too much going on. I'm trying to do at least a couple of rounds on the sock... it will be done someday.

Birthday Presents Arrived

My birthday presents to me are here! I got my yarn from Brooks Farm on Friday. It's just as gorgeous as I thought it would be! It's so soft and the colors are wonderful.
It's going to become a Clapotis (never got around to making one when the pattern first came out on Knitty.) I ordered 4 skeins (1080 yards) which should be more than enough. I'm hoping to knit up a scarf as well.

I also got my Knit Picks Options needles. The binder at the top is my current storage system for circulars and DPNs. I'm hoping to hit the office supply store and see if I can find a few more of the storage pages for the KP binder. It's smaller and zips so everything stays in.

I'm working on the second Wine and Roses mitt and I've got a quick pair of Fetchings in DB Cashmerino Aran to finish up. Then I'll get to try out my new needles on my Clapotis. I'm headed to New Orleans (the French Quarter) with Hubby for a work related meeting in May and thought this might come in handy at night while we're walking around.

I also won a 7 oz Cherry Tree Hill Mill ends skein and ordered three skeins of Lorna's Laces sock yarn on ebay from Birds n Yarn . Just got it and it's beautiful as well! Can't wait to make some socks with the Cherry Hill, but I bought the Lorna's Laces with L in mind. Something little girlie... I'll have to give it some thought! (But, it's all sock yarn and doesn't count for stash.)

I guess I'm not doing so well at my knitting from stash resolution. Can I try again starting April 1?? No jokes! Do birthday presents count? As of April 1st I'm on the wagon and will attend all Yarn Anonymous meetings I can!!!

Here's a picture of my recently catalogued stash closet. The drawers aren't all full, but since I got a couple more drawer units I can open them all. A lot of my yarn is left from other projects. It looks like a lot, but I'm sure it's not as much as some. Right? (I do not need to buy any more yarn! I could knit for a very long time without it and will stick to the Knit from Stash rules.)

Here are a few other pictures of my rearranged and straightened knitting/guest/play room. Hubby has a room set aside for his band to use for practicing. I figured that if he was deserving of a whole room that I should AT LEAST get to share one. We enjoy spending time down there.

We're having absolutely balmy weather here (70 today). I hope everyone gets a taste of this sometime soon!

A Wonderful Weekend!

What a great weekend! Doug's band played Friday night and my in-laws came up to babysit. After L went to bed I headed out to meet up with Doug. There was a little stowaway in my bag...the sock decided to tag along. While my husband thinks I'm a "geek" I quite enjoyed knitting my way through the bands and my beer. (Since smoking in bars and restaurants is now banned here I didn't have to worry about how awful my knitting would smell!) I added about an inch and a half to the sock and am getting closer to turning the heel. Maybe I will get to wear them before it gets warm.

I turned into a pumpkin at midnight and headed home. I was tired on Saturday, but I'm glad I was able to go to the show. However, I think I'll be waiting until L is sleeping consistently before I stay out that late again!

Saturday we just hung out around the house. Doug took H to see our nephew's pine derby race while L took a nap and I cleaned house, did laundry, etc. I also made a huge pot of spaghetti sauce. I'm in a dinner exchange and I needed to drop my meals off on Sunday. I've now got 2 meals worth of Tortellini soup, Meatless Shepherd's Pie, Venison Lasagna, King Ranch Chicken, Mexican Chicken Casserole and meat sauce in the freezer! H had a birthday party to go to Saturday evening. We had fun... kids played and the adults got to visit. I knew all the other moms.

Sunday started with Doug changing his FIRST DIAPER OF L's. L is now 11 months old. Doug changed plenty of diapers with H, but I think he was a bit intimidated by the "girl parts". He did a fine job. I give him a hard time about diapers, but I'm so used to doing it that it's really not a big deal to me. Doug baked me a cake and frosted it. We headed to my brother and SIL's for dinner. H and our nephew decorated it with sprinkles for me and it was delicious!

On the knitting front, I ordered 4 skeins of Brooks Farm Four Play in Nantucket colorway for a Clapotis (I've wanted to make one since the pattern came out on Knitty.) I also ordered a set of Knit Picks Options needles! I can't wait to try these out. I've read all the reviews on KnittersReview and figured I had some birthday money burning a whole in my pocket. I also finished the first Wine and Roses mitt and started the second. They're a bit tight on me (even after blocking), but my hands are a bit larger than most women's hands. I think they'll fit the giftee just right. Now it's a matter of getting them done! Doug's mitts are finished... So, what project(s) to start next???

Goodbye

Not to knitting! To the pacifier! We have finally gotten rid of it and I'm excited. There are moments (like 6 a.m. when she's talking up a storm while H is still asleep) that it's still tempting to give it to her, but it's been a week and she's only had it a couple of times for a few minutes each time. She's not looking for them anymore (and I think that I've found all of them.) I'm hoping that this will help us get more sleep. She has never been a good sleeper (short naps, frequent wakings) like her brother. And what does this have to do with knitting? Well, I can't get much done when I'm exhausted all the time. Things are getting better, but I've yet to have a really good night sleep.

I'm about half way done with Doug's fingerless mitt. I haven't done much with the Wine and Roses mitt in the last few days, so there's not much to show. I got the new Spring Rowan mag. It does have some great patterns, but all that will wait.

Well, I'm off to get my swim suit on and take H and his friend S to the pool for a bit. Mom is coming to have a playdate with L. Knitting is better on days that S is here. She and H play so well together that I can sit and watch them while I knit (and L is captivated by them both!)

Also, my in-laws are coming to babysit on Friday! Doug's band is playing on Friday and I'm actually going out with adults! No children! Who knows, I might live on the edge and even have a beer. I think I deserve it since my birthday is Sunday (and I'm hoping that there might be some yarn involved in the presents!) I guess I'm now officially in my late 30's instead of mid 30's. I still feel 20ish though.

A Little Progress...

Oy, mama is knitting again! I just had to share this picture since I'm quite infatuated with this little, squishy baby. Unfortunately, her brother doesn't want to hold still for the camera lately. Here's my progress on the Wine and Roses Mitts. I can't wait to see it once it's blocked! I hope the recipient likes them as much as I do (and I've got yarn to make a pair for myself as well.) These are definitely an "after the kids are in bed" knitting project. I'm slowly finishing my sock and Doug's mitts when kids are up, but not needing me at the moment.

I had a nice little break from the kids yesterday. Mom came and watched them while I went to see the ladies I used to work with and have a knitting lunch. (I was at the same place of employment for 15 years - although not the same position). It was great to get to catch up. Most everyone brought their knitting or crocheting with them. We had a pair of fuzzy feet on the needles, a couple of scarves and a hat. I've been home for 2 years in July and I still miss everyone!

As for the picture below, I believe she's trying to gnaw off the store bought socks so mama can make her a pair worthy of such sweet little feet. I've got some Gems Opal in pink panther and a pattern picked out. Good thing she'll be able to go barefoot soon though since she may not have them before fall. Does anyone else find themselves dreaming about knitting on current WIPs? Between L being up last night and weird knitting dreams, I didn't get much sleep. Maybe they weren't dreams... Maybe they were just hallucinations.

Well, off to get L up from her nap so we can run around before H gets home from grandma's house. (It's a great thing to have my mom so close! I did manage a short nap before the phone rang today.)

So, What Was I Doing?

Doug's been gone this weekend. I finished the hat for him to take for little O.K. H has been sick with the croup and with L getting teeth it leads to me getting little sleep or time to knit. I always stay up too late when hubby is gone. I get to pick the channel, knit without hearing snores from the other couch and just have time alone! Short supply of that around here. I'm not in any rush to wean L, but it would be nice if she was done by August so I could go to Stitches Midwest! (Right now I'm lucky to get a couple of hours away... anyone have any tips for getting a 10 month old to use a sippy cup? Our tries at a bottle were not met with a good reaction! We have a VERY opinionated daughter!) I've always wanted to go, but life gets in the way. I'm trying to convince Doug that we could make a vacation of it... visiting friends and family. I might have to find someone to bring my stash enhancements home for me though!

Last night I went through all my yarn, books, etc. and organized everything. That was something I've wanted to do for a while. I feel confident I can find any yarn needed. (And, if I can start a spreadsheet with all the colors, amounts, etc. that I wrote down, I'll be set. I really am a knitting geek!)

We got 2-3 inches of snow Friday evening/Saturday morning. I promised H we could go out for pancakes this morning. L had me up around 6, so by 8:30 a.m. we were out in the snow.

Everyone went to bed early, but I'm still up. Just working on the Wine and Roses mitts. Maybe I'll have a picture on Monday (there's not much to show yet.)

Another Hat and One Mitt

You may have seen the little pigtail hat I made for L. It's a bit tight (I'll rip to the Chinchilla again... third times the charm, right?) and she won't leave it on. So, I was inspired by Grumperina and the beret she made for her grandmother. I was shooting for less of a beret, but not a kufi. I thought it would look cute on L. I made this from Frog Tree chunky alpaca. She seems to like it and will even leave it on for a while (or maybe I'm finally wearing her down. She takes it off, I put it back on.)

I've got one of the mitts done for my husband. I just cast on 48 stitches with some Chocolate DB Cashmerino Aran (#8 needles) that I had in my stash, knit 2x2 rib, knit 8 stitches on scrap yarn to add the thumb later, then continued in rib until he deemed them long enough. He asked if I was going to make them fingerless gloves, but I envisioned him being able to slip his thumb out and push them to the wrist, when needed. (He'll be using them when fly fishing, among other things. I can picture my "hard work" floating down the White River if he actually had to remove them.) He's headed to the cabin again this weekend, although I doubt he'll try any fishing (we just got about 3-4 inches of snow and it's in the low 20's right now.) I promised I'd have them done for the weekend. That means, while he's gone I can work on a project that I want to... namely the Wine and Roses mitts. I've worked a bit on the wrist of the first, but I noticed a problem when I picked it back up today. I think I'll have to rip and start again.

But first, I need to come up with a little hat. Doug is also headed to Springfield this weekend and will be visiting our friends Kenny and Laura! They had little Owen Kenneth (O.K.) last week (her water broke during Survivor, just as predicted by a friend.) and I need to come up with a hat to go with our baby gift. Guess I need to go look through the stash again!

Resolve Weakening...

Well, my resolve has weakened. I've stepped back a little from the sock. My husband keeps mentioning how he'd love to have some fingerless gloves to wear when he goes fly fishing, so I finally got started on some. I had a few extra skeins of brown DB Cashmerino Aran in my stash and he asked that they be soft and not too thick/stiff. I hope this works out for him. I've only got about an inch of ribbing done right now. If it doesn't hold up well enough I'll use some Brown Sheep I have in my stash (but he might have to settle for something a little less "subdued." I'm trying to use stash. Does it count against me if I tell him what he wants and he buys it? If he likes these I'm sure he'll ask that I make some for my BIL and FIL for Christmas.

Before the pestering began last night (about the fingerless gloves) I also cast on for the Wine and Roses Mitts in the Winter 06 Interweave Knits. I had some Frog Tree Alpaca in fingering weight (the pale yellow) that I thought might look nice. I'll try to have a picture in a day or two.

I went by the LYS today to get the new issue of Knits, but they didn't have it yet. I ended up with Mason-Dixon Knitting and a red skein of Opal sock yarn. H has been asking for a pair of red socks, so I'll have to get to that sometime soon.

Too much to knit, so little time!

Nothing New Here

Well, I'm still plugging away at the sock. (It's not that I don't like knitting socks, but I just keep thinking of all the other things I could be knitting!) The kids have had colds and I've been up a lot. All my knitting energy has been drained. Hopefully, I'll have at least one new project to report on in my next post. Since I don't have anything exciting to report I just thought I'd post a couple of pictures of FO that have been outgrown and are being packed away.

This is from Debbie Bliss "The Baby Knits Book: The Ultimate Collection of Knitwear Designs for Newborns to 3-Year-Olds" and done in Elsebeth Lavold Cotton Patine. I enjoy knitting with this yarn and LOVE the colors. I did this sweater (almost exact same colors) twice before for baby showers. (One was for Amelia's big brother, Leo. Now she'll get to use it as well.) Doug liked it so much he requested one for L. She did get to wear it some before she got too big.

This is Trellis from Knitty. I saw ChrisKnits post one quite a while ago that she had done and fell in love! I made a few changes and knit it in one piece to armholes (I think she did this as well as making a change to the cables... my mind is a bit fuzzy today.) L got a lot of use out of this one. I knit it in Cotton Fleece by Brown Sheep and it turned out well. I also made one before this for a baby shower.

Well, I'm off to fix dinner, bathe children and (hopefully) work on the sock.

Itty Bitty Hats

I can't help it... I LOVE to knit for babies! I go into overdrive when a friend gets pregnant! We just heard from some close friends in KC that they are having a baby (no names here just in case! I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise for anyone!) I immediately got out Handknits for Kids by Lucinda Guy. I just needed a cute little baby hat for them to look at and imagine the tiny little head that will fit inside. I tried out the Flower Toggle Hat on page 24! Unfortunately, I haven't found a head small enough to model for us, but believe me. It's cute!

I also made a little hat for Baby Amelia from Itty Bitty Hats! I'll get it in the mail in the next few days (once the felted flower is dry.)
Now, back to the sock! Once it's done I've got two projects for myself to choose from... Argosy in Silk Garden Lite #2014 (same color used in the pattern - I didn't plan it that way. It's just what I had in my stash.) Or a sleeveless tank from the Simple pattern book (the simple tank.)

Here's the pigtail hat I mentioned previously. You can't see much of it, but the "pigtail" parts are made with Chinchilla. It's my first attempt at creating my own pattern. I think it's cute and at least I have some "hair" to play with until she has enough of her own!

I was checking out Larissa's blog for info on the TestALongs and saw a picture with a familiar square. It's the second picture, square at the top! It made it there! My first KAL is complete!

My First KAL

SQUARE

Well, it took a while, but I finally finished a square for my first KAL! The pattern wasn't difficult, but two cute little kids decided to wake me up a lot recently. I had trouble finding much time to knit. (It's a bit tough to do with a baby attached to your hip.) I was hoping to finish at least two, but I'm not sure it will happen. I'll start another today and see if I can get it there in time. They have to be in their mailbox on the 1st of February.

I'm trying to decide on my next project. I have to finish a pair of socks (in Opal Rodeo #1156)... my first pair for myself! (I started these over a year ago for a friend. She's since received a different gift and I'm keeping these instead.) It's just a basic top down pattern. My husband, FIL, BIL and mother have all received pairs in Opal.

We have some close friends that had a baby girl yesterday (Amelia - that was one of our top picks when we had L.) I think I need to make a sweet little hat to keep her head warm.

I've also got a stash of Mission Falls cotton that I got on sale when they were having problems and stopped selling it for a while. I bought it for some very sweet baby sweaters, but also bought a couple of Mission Falls design booklets. The Spring 2001 edition has a sleeveless sweater that only takes 7 balls. Lucky me! I've got enough for a couple of them in different colors! (plus some...) That would assist with my "knit for self" resolution!

Hi, I'm Jenn and I have a knitting habit!

I've gone back and forth about starting a knitting blog. I finally started a blog for the kids (we have a 3 yo and 9 mo) and thought I'd put knitting stuff on there, but finally realized that most of the people that will read it don't want to hear knitting... they want kid updates.

Here are a few projects that have managed to stay at our house. I also have quite a few sweaters I've made for the kids, but since we have large children (L was 25 1/2 pounds at 9 months... H was a pound heavier at that age) they've been outgrown and I don't have any models!

Red happens to be the favorite color of H. He has to have at least a little red every day! I made this hat for him out of Frog Tree Alpaca (two strands held together). He loves it and now wants a scarf and mittens to match. He's also wearing a Debbie Bliss sweater made for my oldest nephew. It's holding up well (made with Brown Sheep worsted weight.)

Our (best) LYS asked me to knit up the Elizabeth Zimmermann Baby Surprise Jacket out of Jo Sharp Silkroad Tweed for display. I was in there recently with the kids and they sent the jacket home for L to wear until she outgrows it. Then I'll take it back for display again. It was such a fun pattern to knit! I've got the yarn for another, but just need to find the time.

I had a sole ball of Noro Kureyon (wish I could remember the colorway -- UPDATE - it's #88) and knit up this hat for H. His dad wants one like it.

I'm finishing a pair of socks (very basic top down) that I started well before the baby came. I just did my first moebius and can't wait to do more!

I'm working on a hat for our baby (with pigtails since she has very little hair.)

Most of the things I've knit over the years have been gifts. I knit a lot of baby things or presents for loved ones and not much for myself. I'm hoping 2007 will change that and I'll have a few things finished for me!

Anyway, I can't promise too much excitement, but if you do read this let me know that you've been here.
